“Give a two sentence definition about what you think beauty is.” That’s what I was told. “Seriously? Two sentences?” I thought for a few days. Nothing. Well not nothing, actually…too much.
Nothing I could boil down into a reduction fit for human consumption. The idea of beauty is so subjective, how can such a synopsis be formed?
Everyone’s drawn to beauty in one way or another. I know I am. It is what I strive to achieve in everything I do. The idea of working with such innovative imagery created by the team at Ziba was a huge draw for me. I liked the idea of creating a TV show that was able to showcase such unique visuals, and so began Ziba’s and my journey into the fashion/beauty television market. Of course I would classify our subjects as
beautiful, but can’t say that my idea of beauty is limited to well-styled models. Beauty is anything that makes you feel inspired. Something beautiful should bring out something creative in you, and it’s very evident in the fashion industry. Women thumb through magazines to find looks that they can use themselves just like a painter searches the world over for scenery that could inspire a masterpiece. I chose a career in film and television because it allows me an outlet to showcase what I find visually appealing. In doing so, I realize that images I present in print and on film create a level of perfection difficult to reproduce. Everyone wants to be beautiful, and it becomes increasingly difficult to reproduce a standard of beauty created by
professional stylists. That actress you want to look like has a team of people fawning over her on set to make sure no hair is out of place. There’s a level of deception more present in film than most mediums. Body doubles, airbrushing, and numerous takes help to achieve the perfect look. After a minute your eye becomes trained on only one acceptable level of beauty… perfection. It’s important to take a step back and remember that the most beautiful things in life aren’t perfect. Almost all famous artwork has holes and scratches, the statue of David is chipped and everything in nature is flawed somehow.
You think models are perfect? They just seem that way. It’s all an illusion. It’s a beautiful fantasy world that we create to offer a release from our own reality.
It’s only meant to be fun, not to suggest the aesthetic inferiority of others. Besides, beauty is only relative to individual preferences, and everybody looks at things differently. Maybe beauty is your newborn baby or maybe it’s a swimsuit model. It could be a plastic bag caught in a draft that appears to be dancing just for you…or maybe it’s just some crew guys off camera with leaf blowers.
Beauty isn’t what you’re shown, it’s where you want to find it.
