Does Eyebrow Threading Hurt?

If you’re asking this question, chances are that you’re a newbie to eyebrow threading – but fear not – we’re going to break it all down for you.

Eyebrow threading is an ancient indian hair removal technique that we, at Ziba Beauty, swear by and all that’s involved is a piece of cotton thread! The thread is twisted around the Brow Artist’s fingers and pulled along areas of unwanted hair in order to grab the brow hairs directly from the root of the follicle. It’s completely natural and chemical-free, which is always a plus when it comes to your skin.

So does it hurt? Yes and no.

With any hair-removal technique there is always going to be some discomfort, threading however, is the least painful. This is because the hair is being removed from the root whereas with brow waxing, you’re feeling the pain of hair being pulled out plus the added pain of the skin being tugged on and the use of a sticky wax on sensitive parts of your skin, which doesn’t help.

If you’ve ever tweezed your brows (it’s okay we’ve all been guilty of this at some point), you can think about the feeling of threading as being similar to plucking 5 hairs at once. It can kind of hurt but it also subsides just as quickly.

Discomfort also depends on each individual person’s sensitivity and the area being threaded. For example, people find the top of their eyebrow being threaded, a lot less painful than the bottom of their brow. Luckily, there is a way to lessen the pain! When you’re having the under part of your brow threaded, your Brow Artist will show you how to hold your eyelid closed and stretch your skin with your fingers – a quick tip we have is to hold your skin tightly because the tighter your pull, the lesser the pain of threading is.

So why do peoples’ eyes water if it doesn’t hurt that much?

Our bodies have natural reactions already stored in us for certain situations. So if you’ve ever seen someone tearing up during their service, it’s less likely that it’s due to pain and more likely that the body is reacting to the sensitive skin areas being threaded. People who don’t feel any pain while getting their eyebrows threaded have also been known to tear up – it’s just the body’s way of telling you that something’s up and to be aware of it.

If it hurts even a little bit, why do people still choose to get threaded?

This is a great question and the best answer is RESULTS. People continue to get their brows and other facial hair threaded because the results they see, far outweigh any pain they might bear.

The benefits of threading over other hair-removal techniques are tenfold and can be summed up with these key points:

  • It’s chemical free.

  • No liquids or harsh substances are being applied to the skin.

  • It’s fast – an experienced artist can take 7 – 10 mins.

  • The results are longer-lasting.

  • Shaping the brows is much easier and more precise than any other brow shaping technique.

  • Threading can remove even the smallest hairs, whereas with waxing you have to wait until the hair grows a certain length in order to have it removed.

  • The skin isn’t being tugged and stretched by a wax and this can help avoid premature wrinkles and any scarring.

  • The hair is being pulled straight from the follicle, so your skin stays in place.

  • Threading can be performed on any parts of the face!

AND the best reason of all – any discomfort or pain you feel the first time you get threaded, will start to lessen every time you get your brows done at Ziba. You will naturally get used to the feeling of threading and some people even enjoy it because it can feel like a massage. Furthermore, even within a single threading session, the pain you feel will decrease as your brow artist works their magic because your body simply gets used to the feeling.

Still a little nervous? Don’t be! The Ziba Brow Artists are professionals who are expertly trained and have been certified to take care of your brows. We encourage you to let your artist know if you’re feeling nervous about getting your brows threaded and rest assured, they’ll do everything they can to make it as comfortable as possible for you.

Wait, there’s more; if you’re still unsure or have a friend or teenager at home who wants to get their brows done but is scared it’ll hurt – we have a service catered just to you and them called: The Virgin Brow.

The Virgin Brow is meant for first time eyebrow shapers and is a consultative and transformational service. It begins with a thorough consultation, including facial measurements and concludes with Ziba’s Signature Finish.

The package includes 3 Brow Appointments which is perfect for nervous first-timers because it allows the Brow Artist to take the extra time to explain threading to the client. In addition, the client has 3 services to get used to the feeling of threading; so for example, the first service could be focused on the top of the brow and the second service, the bottom. By the time the client gets to the last service, they will be far more comfortable than they were and have had the time:

  • to get used to the feeling,

  • to get to know their brow artist

  • AND to figure out what their ideal brow shape is and how long it takes for their eyebrow hair to grow between sessions.

For $49 it’s a win win win situation – all you have to do is call your local Ziba Studio to make an appointment!

If you want to see threading performed in-person before making an appointment, you are more than welcome to join us at any of our Studios. We can also help you talk to other customers about their brow experiences. Of course, our staff and artists will also be there to answer any of your questions!

Hopefully this blog post helps to answer your Eyebrow Threading questions. To recap: Does threading hurt? A little. But less than other options and it’s 100% worth it for the results you get. A few minutes of discomfort in return for weeks of beautiful brows and zero chemicals on the skin… no brainer.

Take Care,

Ziba Beauty x
